What is the most important meal of the day?
For years we have heard that breakfast is the most important meal of the day, yet so many of us skip this meal because mornings are too busy and we are running out of the door before we even have a chance to think about what we could possibly eat.
I am always talking to clients about making breakfast a priority for overall health. Ensuring that we start the day with a nutritious breakfast. The most important meal of the day can help to stabilise energy and reduce overeating during other meals within your day. Nutritious breakfast items should include carbohydrates, protein, healthy fats and plenty of micronutrients.
Below I have included one of my favourite winter breakfast meal that can easily be adapted to suit personal needs and tastes. For those that are extremely busy of the morning it could also be taken to work and eaten in a relaxed environment to ensure optimal digestion and absorption.
Healthy Breakfast Bowl
2 cups of water
1 cup milk
1.5 cups of rolled oats
1 tsp cinnamon
4 heaped tsp nut butter
1 tsp honey
2 bananas, sliced
1 cup of blueberries
2 Tbs pepitas
1. Combine oats, cinnamon, water and milk in a saucepan and cook over low to medium heat, stirring occasionally.
2. Once cooked (liquid should be absorbed and oats should be softened) stir in nut butter and honey.
3. Scoop in bowls and top with banana, blueberries and a sprinkle of pepitas.
As mentioned above, this recipe can be adapted to suit personal health needs and tastes. For example switching the rolled oats for rice flakes, or using various fruits, nuts and seeds to serve.
I also love this recipe as you can make it in bulk and store it in the fridge for subsequent breakfast meals. I generally just add a little extra milk and then heat it up in the microwave prior to adding fruit
I would love to hear your thoughts!
